The Life Science and Exploration Society at Mirabelle Restaurant Presents the Third Epicurean Event of its Distinguished
"Life Science & Exploration Society" at Mirabelle Restaurant at Three Village Inn will host the third program in its Distinguished Lecture Series on Monday, February 22 at 6:30 p.m.
This Epicurean event will feature Dr. David Krause, Distinguished Service Professor of Anatomical Sciences at State University of New York at Stony Brook. Dr. Krause will discuss his discovery of Cretaceous vertebrates in Madagascar, how they are relevant to testing hypotheses concerning biogeography and plate tectonics, and how his work has led him back to Madagascar by assisting with education and healthcare for children in the nation's remote areas. The evening will include a five-course menu featuring four-star cuisine prepared by award-winning Chef Guy Reuge. The cost is $115 per person, inclusive of wine. Seating is limited to 30 people and reservations are required.
About Dr. David Krause:
In 1993, Dr. Krause launched a reconnaissance expedition in search of Cretaceous dinosaurs, mammals, and other fossil backboned animals to Madagascar, a large island off the southeast coast of Africa that is home to some of the most bizarre plants and animals on the planet. Not in his wildest dreams did he anticipate the paleontological riches that he and his colleagues would find on that expedition, as well as on the nine field campaigns since. Among the most significant finds are exquisitely preserved skulls and skeletons of previously unknown sauropod and theropod dinosaurs, a diverse array of crocodiles, and, most recently, the largest frog ever to have existed. These discoveries have profound implications for addressing questions related to plate tectonics and biogeography, specifically the timing and sequence of fragmentation of the southern supercontinent of Gondwana during the Mesozoic and the origins of Madagascar's extant fauna. Dr. Krause will present an overview of his exciting discoveries in Madagascar and how they are relevant to testing hypotheses concerning biogeography and plate tectonics. He will close with a very brief consideration of how his work led him to give back to the country by assisting with education and healthcare for children living in remote areas of the island nation.
